Dark Souls: The Board Game Darkroot expansion

The Darkroot expansion is intended for use with Dark Souls: the Board Game. It adds new enemies, encounter cards, and treasure cards as well as introducing the Sif, the Great Grey Wolf main boss and the Knight Artorias main boss to the game.

Once the heart of the kingdom of Oolacile, it is still possible in the Darkroot to see several landmarks of that realm of ancient sorceries and myth. Undoubtedly, the most poignant amongst them is the final resting place of Sir Artorias the Abysswalker, guarded eternally by his companion, the Great Grey Wolf Sif.

The strongest of the Four Knights of Gwyn, Lord of the Sunlight, Artorias was the first mortal to traverse the Abyss, having made covenant with the beasts within. And so, as Manus, Father of the Abyss came to threaten Oolacile, it was there that Artorias would give his life in his final battle.

Overwhelmed by the Dark, Artorias’ last act was to shield his companion, even as the Dark corrupted the once proud knight and he fell. Forever denied his rightful rest, instead Artorias was cursed to wander as an insane and twisted revenant.

This tale is surely the most noble and tragic of sacrifices which belong to that lost civilisation, only eclipsed by the eventual defeat of the tainted Knight Artorias by an unnamed hero. His pristine soul finally returned to his knightly brethren, it was by this act that Artorias’ honour was once more restored, and his legend resurrected.
