The Leopard II Main Battle Tank was a third-generation main battle tank developed by the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s (after World War II). It was the mainstream tank of the Western countries in the late 20th century and early 21st century. The Leopard II design ideas influenced the design of main battle tanks in several countries. Every time NATO held a tank shooting competition, at least half of the countries competed with the Leopard 2, and the results never fell out of the top three.
